UN Applauds US Efforts for Peace in Ukraine

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed strong approval for the diplomatic efforts led by US President Donald Trump aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, speaking at a press briefing, remarked that "The Secretary-General very much welcomes the recent diplomatic engagements spearheaded by the US and President Trump, focusing on achieving a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, and obviously yesterday's discussions in Washington were the center of that effort."

These talks, held in Washington, marked a pivotal moment in the broader strategy to promote peace in the region.

Dujarric further stressed the Secretary-General’s belief in the necessity of continued commitment from all parties involved.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining the current positive momentum, which is directed toward reaching an "immediate ceasefire and sustainable peace in Ukraine." The UN, according to him, values an "inclusive dialogue" as a means to that end.

He also pointed out that there is active debate around various aspects of the potential negotiations, including possible formats and venues.

"There's a lot of discussion going on about potential dialogue formats, location, and we know the outcome we want to see," he said.

Highlighting the importance of direct engagement, Dujarric commented that it’s vital for all parties to speak "directly" with one another.

He added that the UN remains "supportive and ready to engage in a role that may or may not be given to us," signaling the organization’s willingness to contribute if called upon.

Diplomatic momentum picked up following a meeting last week between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

That initial discussion was followed by another high-level meeting on Monday in Washington, involving Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and various European leaders.

These gatherings represent a significant step forward in international efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
