Russia, Ukraine Reach Agreement to Exchange 314 Prisoners of War

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to exchange 314 prisoners of war following trilateral negotiations hosted in Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital, according to US envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday.

"Today, delegations from the United States, Ukraine, and Russia agreed to exchange 314 prisoners—the first such exchange in five months," Witkoff wrote on US social media company X.

The announcement left ambiguous whether 314 represents the combined total or the number each nation will release.

The two warring nations last executed a prisoner swap on Oct. 2, 2025, following agreements negotiated in Istanbul, the Turkish metropolis that facilitated three rounds of direct peace negotiations earlier that year.

Addressing the US-brokered diplomatic efforts, Witkoff characterized the negotiations as "detailed and productive."

"While significant work remains, steps like this demonstrate that sustained diplomatic engagement is delivering tangible results and advancing efforts to end the war in Ukraine," he added.

He indicated that discussions will continue, with "additional progress anticipated in the coming weeks," and thanked the UAE for hosting the consultations, as well as US President Donald Trump for "his leadership in making this agreement possible."

Thursday marked the second day of ongoing consultations involving delegations from Moscow, Kyiv, and Washington in Abu Dhabi—the second round of such meetings.

Initial discussions took place Jan. 23-24, also held in Abu Dhabi.
