Japan Pledges Millions to Restore Ukraine’s Cultural Sites
The funding announcement took place during a ceremony in Kyiv on Tuesday, attended by Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Nakagome Masashi, Ukrainian officials, and UNESCO representatives.
Tokyo plans to channel the aid through UNESCO to support the restoration of cultural sites affected by the war.
UNESCO has confirmed that over 500 cultural locations in Ukraine have sustained damage, including structures of historical and artistic importance.
The agency stated that the new funds will enhance efforts to assess the condition of cultural heritage sites using satellite imagery and other evaluation techniques.
“This will allow for rapid emergency measures to stabilize and repair damaged cultural sites and help prevent further deterioration,” UNESCO emphasized.
According to the UN organization, Japan’s donation represents nearly 40% of the total funding that UNESCO has raised for Ukraine.
