Ukraine, Russia, US Resume Trilateral Talks in Geneva

(MENAFN) A third series of trilateral discussions involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States commenced on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland, as the parties aim to advance diplomatic initiatives toward a ceasefire.

These negotiations take place just a week before the fourth anniversary of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, with hostilities still ongoing.

The Russian delegation is led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, signaling a departure from the senior military officers who oversaw prior discussions in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov indicated that the Geneva talks would address a "wider range of issues," encompassing what he referred to as the "main issues concerning the territories."

Ukraine’s delegation is headed by Rustem Umerov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and comprises senior political and security figures. Kyiv emphasized that its team is acting within the framework established by the nation’s leadership to secure a meaningful and enduring peace.

Officials from Ukraine are anticipated to advocate for an energy-related ceasefire and provide clarity on how a monitoring system would operate if a truce is successfully negotiated.

Ahead of the talks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that Moscow might be planning another "massive strike," noting that Russian military pressure has persisted despite the resumption of diplomatic discussions.

The negotiations are expected to proceed mainly behind closed doors, with no immediate media briefing anticipated.
