Third Round of US-Mediated Ukraine-Russia Talks Continues in Geneva

(MENAFN) For a second consecutive day, representatives from Ukraine and Russia reconvened in Geneva on Wednesday for the third round of trilateral discussions aimed at ending the war, with the United States acting as intermediary. The previous session stretched beyond four hours before adjourning.

The talks are being guided by Steve Witkoff, a special envoy appointed by US President Donald Trump, alongside Jared Kushner. They take place as the conflict approaches its fourth year and while hostilities persist.

Russia’s team is led this time by presidential adviser Vladimir Medinsky, who has stepped in to replace the high-ranking military figures that represented Moscow during earlier meetings held in Abu Dhabi. Prior to the latest discussions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that the agenda would expand beyond earlier topics. He said the negotiations would cover a "wider range of issues," including the "main issues concerning the territories," which he described as central to Moscow's demands.

On the Ukrainian side, the delegation is headed by Rustem Umerov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. "We have a framework for work agreed upon by the President of Ukraine (Volodymyr Zelenskyy) and a clear mandate. Security and humanitarian issues are on the agenda," Umerov said earlier.

Earlier Wednesday, Umerov confirmed that discussions had resumed, writing on the US-based social media platform Facebook that talks are being conducted in "working groups by areas within the political and military tracks."

He further explained the focus of the ongoing efforts, stating: "We are working on clarifying the parameters and mechanisms of the decisions discussed yesterday. We are focused on substantive work. We will provide additional information on the results."

Late Tuesday, Umerov also revealed that he had concluded a separate coordination meeting with American and European representatives — including officials from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland — to align strategies for the next phases of engagement, according to reports.
