Hungary Ties Support for Ukraine’s EU Talks to Fulfillment of Pledges

(MENAFN) The Hungarian government has indicated it is prepared to back the launch of Ukraine’s first European Union accession negotiation cluster, provided that Kyiv fulfills its promised obligations, according to statements made by the prime minister following what he described as a broad bilateral understanding.

Peter Magyar said that both sides had reached a wide-ranging agreement focused on strengthening the rights of more than 100,000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region. He shared the remarks on the social media platform X.

"We have reached a comprehensive agreement with Ukraine on expanding the linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights of the more than 100,000 members of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia," Peter Magyar wrote on the US social media platform X.

According to his statement, the understanding emerged after several weeks of detailed technical negotiations between Budapest and Kyiv. Representatives of Hungarian minority political and religious groups in Transcarpathia were also involved in the discussions.

He further explained that Ukraine has pledged to integrate the agreed measures into its domestic legal framework in the near future. If implemented, these changes would significantly expand educational, cultural, linguistic, and political rights for the Hungarian minority in the region.

"These commitments will also be included in Ukraine’s action plan submitted to the European Union. If this happens, the Hungarian government will support the opening of Ukraine’s first accession cluster," he noted.
